Am I the asshole for hiding that my home was a rental from my ex-wife?

I rented an apartment during college and never disclosed it was a rental to my wife. Now in our divorce she accuses me of lying. Am I the asshole?

i dont think u r an asshole. renting a home isnt a huge fib if you werent trynna hurt anyone. ex is overreacting a bit. its just details and not a major lie.

In my experience, the rental detail often seems negligible as long as it doesn’t affect any larger legal or financial outcomes. The main dishonesty would be in deliberately hiding important facts that alter decision-making. Omitting that detail might simply be a matter of oversight rather than intentional deceit. Though transparency is valuable, especially in personal relationships, sometimes distinguishing between what is truly material versus what is minor can help both parties move forward with a clearer picture of the situation.

Hey, I’ve noticed similar issues can reveal deeper trust problems. Do you think her reaction was more about feeling deceived overall rather than just the rental detail? I’m curious what you all think about how much background really matters in these disputes.

i think its not a major fib, more like a detail lost in tne mix. maybe the issue is more about overall trust than the rental thing itself. if nothing was purposely concealed to gain an edge, it seems a case of neglecting minor info rather than pure dishonesty.

Reflecting on my own experiences in similar situations, I believe that omissions which initially appear minor can trigger larger issues, especially during emotionally charged periods like divorces. While not disclosing that the home was a rental may seem like an oversight rather than a deliberate lie, it unfortunately contributes to a pattern of diminished trust. In hindsight, full transparency—even about details considered trivial at the time—might have helped in preserving honesty and mutual respect. I find that early and complete disclosure helps prevent long-term misunderstandings.
