I’m in a tough spot with some land I got from my dad. It’s in New York and used to be worth a lot. Now it’s pretty much useless because of new wetland rules.
The government didn’t even tell me about the change. One day the land was fine, the next it was a swamp on paper. The town says it’s worth almost nothing now, but they still want me to pay high taxes on it. It’s crazy!
I’ve tried everything to get rid of it. Selling is out. Nobody wants to buy a wetland. Donating it? That’s a no-go too. Even the nature groups don’t want it unless I pay them a bunch of money. It’s like I’m stuck with a money pit.
Has anyone else dealt with something like this? I’m wondering if there’s a way out that I haven’t thought of. Maybe the town will take it back? Or should I just stop paying and let it go?
This whole mess has me rethinking how I look at owning land. It’s not as safe as I thought. What do you guys think? Any advice would be great!
I’ve been through a similar ordeal with inherited property, and it’s a frustrating situation. Have you considered contacting an environmental law attorney? They might be able to challenge the wetland designation or negotiate with local authorities. Another option could be exploring conservation easements, which might provide tax benefits while preserving the land. It’s a complex issue, but don’t give up hope. There may be solutions you haven’t discovered yet. Keep pushing for answers and document everything in case you need to make a legal case later. Best of luck navigating this difficult situation.
Wow, what a pickle! Have you considered reaching out to local universities? They might be interested in using the wetland for ecological studies. Or maybe there’s a way to turn it into an eco-tourism spot? Just thinking out loud here. How are you holding up with all this stress?
man, that sucks big time. i had a similar issue with property in florida few yrs back. have u looked into wetland mitigation banking? it’s a longshot but might help u make some cash off the land. or maybe check if any enviro groups want it for research? just spitballing here. good luck bro, hope u find a way out of this mess!
