Overwhelmed by 17k mortgage debt, experiencing daily anxiety

I’m in a tough spot and don’t know what to do. My wife had to stop working to take care of her dad who passed away. Then my father died too. On top of that we got hit by a hurricane. Now I’m six months behind on my mortgage. I tried forbearance but there’s no way I can catch up in just three months.

The good news is I’ve been able to make regular payments for the last three months and can keep that up. My wife is working again and our finances are a bit better. But during all the chaos my credit card debt went through the roof and my credit score tanked.

I’m really worried about losing our home. Does anyone know if I might be able to get a loan modification even with my bad credit? Or are there other options I should look into? I’m desperate for advice on how to handle this. The stress is eating me up.

I’ve been through a similar situation and understand the anxiety you’re feeling. Have you explored a loan modification through your servicer’s loss mitigation department? Even with poor credit, they may have options available given your demonstrated ability to make payments recently. Another avenue to consider is reaching out to your state’s housing finance agency. Many offer foreclosure prevention programs or low-interest loans to help homeowners catch up on payments. Don’t hesitate to advocate for yourself firmly but respectfully when dealing with your lender. Document all communications and be persistent. This is a challenging time, but there are often more options than initially apparent.

hey man, that’s a tough situation. have u looked into getting a loan modification? some lenders will work with u even w/ bad credit. might be worth calling them to see what options they got. don’t give up hope yet, there’s usually a way to work things out

I’m so sorry you’re going through all this! Have you considered talking to a housing counselor? They might have ideas we haven’t thought of. What about negotiating with your mortgage company directly? Sometimes they’re more flexible than you’d expect. How are you coping with the stress day-to-day?
